The small city of Vila Real was built in the 18th century as a home for fishermen sent to reclaim the fishing grounds of the eastern Algarve from Spain. The town is connected with the Spanish town of Ayamonte by a small ferry across the Guadiana, which was the only way to cross until the construction of the bridge in 1991. Enjoy a drink and some people-watching in Praça Marquês de Pombal, the elegant tiled main square.
