Mealtimes in Spain

Please be aware that Spaniards follow a very particular routine in terms of their daily meals, and this is often strictly enforced by restaurant opening hours, especially in small towns!

You can expect restaurants to be open for lunch from approximately 1:30pm – 4pm. Many places will offer a menú del día: a set menu with 2/3 options for each course, usually including a drink, bread and dessert or coffee. Remember that lunch is the main meal of the day in Spain.

Dinnertime in Spain is any time from 8pm onwards. Dinner in Spain is typically a lighter meal.

Our first stop is the beautiful city of Girona. We’ll tkae some time to admire the colourful houses that line the River Onyar, the views from the medieval city walls and the atmosphere of one of the best-preserved Jewish Quarters in the world.

From Girona, we’ll transfer to the lakeside town of Banyoles, a popular training ground for local cyclists, both amateur and professional!

1:30pm: Lunch in Banyoles at Restaurant Carpa de L’Estany.

Next, it’s time to start cycling! We’ll warm up with a peaceful circuit of Lake Banyoles, where smooth lakeside paths offer wide-open views. From there, the route heads north into the quiet countryside of the Pla de l’Estany and Alt Empordà, through rolling fields, oak forests, and small stone villages.

As the terrain gradually becomes more undulating, you’ll enjoy expansive views toward the Pyrenees and the Empordà plain. The final approach winds through vineyard-dotted hills before arriving at Hotel Mas Falgarona, a beautifully restored country estate near Avinyonet de Puigventós.

Dinner tonight at the hotel’s restaurant is included. When checking in, please let reception staff know at what time you would like to eat.

Tuesday, 17th March. Torrent
Route: 71.5 km/44.4 miles
Elevation: +1183 m/+3880 ft
Accommodation: Mas de Torrent Hotel and Spa
Hotel services: Restaurant, bar, swimming pool, spa, gym, laundry

Today’s route begins with some beautiful cycling through the vineyards of the Alt Empordà, passing through wine towns such as Peralada, the cava capital of the Empordà, and Vilajuïga, famous for its natural mineral water and historic dolmens, with the distant Pyrenees as a constant backdrop.

After Vilajuïga, comes today’s star attraction: a stunning route around the windswept peninsula of Cap de Creus! We’ll begin with a challenging ascent up to the hilltop abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes, which dates back to the 9th century, before enjoying a smooth downhill ride into Port de la Selva, a whitewashed fishing village framed by hills.

Next, we’ll climb Sa Perafita before enjoying a thrilling descent into Cadaqués: steep, technical, and flanked by stark granite hills that suddenly give way to a view of the town nestled against a sparkling bay. Cadaqués is a charming fishing port made famous for its association with Catalan painter Dalí.

From Cadaqués, we’ll continue east toward Far del Cap de Creus, a lighthouse perched on the edge of the world. The road narrows and becomes rougher, but the views are epic — jagged cliffs, crystalline coves, and windswept headlands.

1:30pm: Lunch at Restaurant Cap de Creus.

After lunch, we’ll head to the beautiful seafront village of Portlligat to visit Dalí’s former home.

4:30pm: Visit to Casa-Museo Salvador Dalí.

Today, we’ll enjoy a beautiful circular route through the very best of the Baix Empordà, linking its most iconic medieval villages with open countryside and coastal views. Quiet gravel lanes and secondary roads lead first toward Pals, where the hilltop old town overlooks rice fields stretching toward the sea. A gentle rise brings up to the Mas Pinell viewpoint, from where on a clear day we can spot the Medes Islands.

Turning inland, the landscape becomes a patchwork of orchards, cereals, and sunlit fields framed by the distant Gavarres hills. The route threads through timeless villages such as Fontclara and Ullastret, each rich in history and character. We’ll take a break at Púbol, where we can admire the castle that Dalí bought for his wife, Gala.

2pm: Lunch at Restaurant Can Bosch

After lunch, we’ll continue through La Bisbal, the Empordà’s ceramics hub, and Peratallada, one of the region’s best-preserved medieval towns. Rolling terrain and peaceful farm tracks create a steady rhythm of small climbs and flowing sections, offering variety without being overly demanding.

We’ll finish up at Mas Torrent for a well-deserved afternoon at leisure in our luxury hotel.

8:30pm: Dinner at Restaurante El Pedrò (Pals).

Cycle route 3: Medieval villages loop

Our final route blends medieval charm with some of the most beautiful coastline in the Baix Empordà. Quiet country lanes lead first to Sant Feliu de Boada, then south toward Palafrugell, passing through gently rolling farmland dotted with stone farmhouses and cypress trees.

Reaching the sea, the character of the ride changes as we follow the coastline through Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell, celebrated as the “pearl of the Costa Brava” for its picturesque, unspoilt character. A climb toward the Platja de Castell viewpoint rewards you with sweeping coastal panoramas before the route turns inland once more.

Next, we head west through vineyards and wooded hills, before finishing our ride at Celler Bell-lloc, one of the area’s best wineries.

2pm: Lunch at Celler Bell-lloc, followed by a guided tour and tasting.

At leisure in Barcelona

Barcelona, the vibrant capital of Catalonia, is renowned for its unique blend of modernist architecture, rich cultural heritage, and Mediterranean charm. Whether you’re wandering through its historic streets, marveling at Gaudí’s masterpieces, or indulging in its culinary delights, Barcelona offers an unforgettable experience.

Click here for our Google Maps list of recommendations in Barcelona.

Top of your list should be the Sagrada Familia (open Mon – Fri 9am – 8pm, Sat 9am – 6pm, Sun 10:30 – 8pm, prior booking recommended). Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Barcelona. The basilica is due to be finally completed in 2026, so now could be your last chance to see it in its famously unfinished state!

Continue your Gaudí tour with a walk around the Eixample neighbourhood, where you can admire the modernist Casa Batlló (open daily 8:30am – 10pm) and Casa Milà (open daily 9am – 6:30pm/7pm-11pm)

Head north to visit another Gaudí highlight: the iconic gingerbread houses of Park Güell (open daily 9:30 – 5:30, prior booking highly recommended).

Take a stroll down La Rambla, Barcelona’s vibrant artery. Just under a mile long, this famous street is always buzzing with locals, tourists and street performers. Don’t miss the popular Mercado de la Boquería, an enormous food and drink market dating back almost 200 years!

Head to Montjuïc to admire some modern art at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (open Tue – Sat 10am – 6pm, Sun 10am – 3pm) and the Fundació Joan Miró (open Tue – Sun 10am – 7pm), soak up some history and admire the views from the Castell de Montjuïc (open daily 10am – 6pm), or catch the nightly light and music shows at the Montjuïc Magic Fountain!

Explore Barcelona’s atmospheric Gothic Quarter, built over the original ancient Roman settlement of Barcino. Don’t miss the magnificent Gothic Cathedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, which dates back to the 15th century (open Mon – Fri 10am – 6:30pm, Sat 9:30am – 5:15pm and Sun 2pm – 5pm).

Eating and drinking in Barcelona

For an immersive historical experience, enjoy lunch or dinner at Els 4Gats (open Tue – Sat 11am – 11pm. Sun 11am – 4pm), which was the hub of Barcelona’s modernist movement at the turn of the 20th century.

Treat yourself to a double Michelin star meal at Cinc Sentits, which serves up a modern take on traditional Catalan cuisine.

For fabulous seafood in the trendy Eixample neighbourhood, check out Batea (open Tue – Sat, 1pm – 3:30pm/7:30pm – 10:30pm).

Enjoy a paella by the beach at Maná 75 (open daily 12:45pm – 10:45pm), an elegant option popular with locals and tourists alike.

For an authentic experience, head down to the historic fisherman’s quarter near La Barceloneta beach for a tapas crawl. Some of our favourite bars are Can Paixano, Cervecería Vaso de Oro and Can Ros, as well as the Mercado de la Barceloneta.
